34 Officers Parade is a 7707 sq metre block gently sloping to the Lachlan River. The home is situated on the upper aspect with expanses of lawn and garden at the rear. The garden is best described as being one that continues to evolve. Allyn and I have had time (and financial) constraints with us both working and on-going involvement in our property. The ‘evolving’ process has also been hindered by the trial and error process of having to replace plants and shrubs that have not tolerated dry, frosty or water restricted conditions.

The motivation to revamp the existing garden was in April 2008 when our son and daughter-in-law, James and Bec announced their engagement and wished to have their wedding reception in a marquee in our garden.

The main front garden was stripped. It had the benefit of having structural edgings in place. With the assistance of Kerrie Sides, a formal garden was planted. Existing smaller garden areas in the front are still being developed.

The original back area consisted of garden beds off the verandah and a ‘mounded’ garden looking down onto a half tennis court, tiled entertainment area and above ground pool. All these garden beds were stripped. A sandstone brick retainer wall replaced the canna and agapanthus covered mound drop and the garden outlines were also bordered with these bricks. These gardens have had randomly planted shrubs and bulbs in mainly pink, white and blue colours. The tennis court was replaced with turf and borders of murraya and duranta shrubs on either end.

Beyond this fenced area are expanses of lawn and garden beds which are yet to be completed. The pool has been removed with the plan to have an indoor / outdoor entertaining area built.
